As the year moves into the fall with some relief from the heat up ahead, you have a good opportunity to evaluate your air conditioners and decide if it’s time to have it replaced. - Fall is a convenient time: Replacing an air conditioning system is easier in the fall, when HVAC technicians have fewer emergencies to worry about. So if the job needs doing, now is the time to do it.
- The system is too old: How old is “too old” for an AC? It depends on the system. The average lifespan for a central air conditioner is 10 to 15 years. If your air conditioner is over 12 years and experiencing performance issues, than it’s probably time to replace it.
- You encountered repair problems over the summer: Did it seem as if the air conditioner was fighting an uphill battle throughout the previous season, and you needed to have it repaired more than once? That’s a sign that you should investigate replacement as an option.
- Electrical bills are rising: As an air conditioning system wears down, it will start to cost more to run. If you’ve seen a rise in bills during the last summer, even with the air conditioner receiving regular maintenance, then it’s smart to replace it with a newer, higher efficiency system.
