Is Your Air Conditioner Oversized? – Stafford

We are often asked, “Why do you schedule in-home estimates instead of just selling equipment?” In short, it is because we want to sell you the right sized air conditioner. While two homes may both buy the same model, the XC13 for example, the size of the XC13 will vary depending on the unique factors of the home.

So, when our Comfort Specialist comes out on a Free in-home estimate, he is assessing your home to properly size your equipment.

What Happens if an Air Conditioner Is too Large?

  • Short Cycling: Air conditioners only run until the indoor temperature reaches the desired setting. So, because your AC is going to pump out too much air too quickly, it won’t be long before the temperature is lowered. That may sound ideal until you look a little deeper.
  • Humidity: As your air conditioner runs, its secondary function is to remove humidity from the air. If the unit is short cycling, it will not have enough time to properly lower humidity levels in the home.
  • Longevity: The wear and tear of constantly start and stopping will not only raise energy bills, but it will drastically shorten the life expectancy of the unit.

How Can You Tell if the AC Is Oversized?

Wait for the next very hot day and listen to your air conditioner. When it turns on, start a stop watch and note how long it takes for your unit to turn off again. If your unit is only running less than 10 minutes at a time, you could have an oversized unit.
